COMPARISON OF MAJOR RELIGIONS
By Synthia Esther
As Christians we believe there is no God but Jehovah (1 Corinthians 8:4,6), expressed in a Trinitarian personal nature as fully God and fully human within three distinct persons being Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-19). The Islamic view of God contends there is only one person in the godhead. Christianity is the only religion that considers Jesus to be God incarnate. Buddhism, as well as Hinduism give Jesus the title ship of guru who leads one towards ultimate reality (Brahman). While Islam acknowledges Jesus as one of several prophets.
Hinduism believers claim the incarnation is really a reincarnation of Krishna. David Horton General Editor, Ryan Horton, Associate Editor, writes concerning significant differences between Krishna and Christ Jesus in his book, The Portable Seminary, A master's Level Overview in One Volume, Bethany House a division of Baker Publishing group, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2006. On page 422, one reads, “Krishna is only a temporary incarnation. He is not an incarnation of monotheistic God but of a pantheistic God. There is no real comparison between the Christian concept of Christ and that of any other religion. Some religious movements and cults have adopted a view of Christ's deity. But each has added its own unorthodox beliefs to destroy the truth-claims of Scripture. One form of Buddhism even has Buddha dying for our sins. But this is far from Christianity and is foreign even to the nature of indigenous Buddhism.”
WORLD RELIGIOUS BOOK COMPARISONS
All major world religions have inspired wisdom books which are considered holy. Ethical Monotheism Judaism has the Law, Torah (basically the first five books of the Old Testament Bible). Islam the Qur'an, with claims of verbal dictation by the angel Gabriel to Muhammad. Hinduism the Bhagavad-Gita. Christianity the divine Bible which was supernaturally inspired and confirmed written by men of God and special acts of God (Exodus 4:1, Hebrews 2:3-4) with predictive prophecy. Horton confirms ( page 423), “Other religions claim predictive prophecy but fail to provide examples of clear predictions hundreds of years in advance that have been literally fulfilled, such as the Bible has. Muslims, for example, claim that Muhammad made predictions in the Qur'an. But upon closer examination they fail to measure up to their billing.”
SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST, A GIFT OF LOVE AND GRACE (JOHN 3:16-17)
"There is no other book that compares with the Bible, which contains a historical record from the first man, our past to the present, and foretells the future."- Synthia Esther
Buddhist have the "eightfold path", Hindu's the "doctrine of karma", the Jewish have "ceremonial law", and the Islamic shari'ah law requires believers to "earn divine approval". In the Christian faith, salvation is found only through acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord, Father, and Friend, which is a gift of grace, unearned, but freely given. Biblical scripture defines two types of grace. In his book, "I Long For You, O GOD", (page 62), Michael Youssef, PhD, explains, "The first is what theologians refer to as "common grace," but more accurately it should be called "mercy," which is freely given to everyone. God "causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous" (Matthew 5:45). The beauty of God's creation is free for everyone to enjoy, whether they follow God or not. In contrast to God's mercy, however, His grace is given exclusively to those who belong to Christ. This grace is lavished only upon those who have accepted the sacrifice of God's Son and received Him as their Savior and Lord. This grace is the unmerited, inexhaustible, and irresistible favor of God. This is the grace that restores us - satisfying our longing for contentment. To constatly revel in the God of grace and the grace of God is the most exhilarating aspect of the Christian life."
We are provided God's gift of grace through Jesus Christ who became the lamb of sacrifice for our sins, having died on Calvary's Cross, rising on the third day, defeating sin and death. Because He lives, we too can share eternal life with Him in Heaven when we invite Him into our heart, repent of our sins, believe and receive salvation's plan. "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." - 2nd Corinthians 9:8 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. but take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33). No other religion or god provides salvation by grace, which is sufficient for all our needs, as God's strength is made perfect in our weakness (2nd Corinthians 12:9). Praise God for His grace!
